On September 23rd, the Opening Ceremony of Dual-Degree Program of 2020 Cohort in Environmental Science jointly conducted by Northwest A&F University and University of Arizona was held in the auditorium of the North Campus of our university. Vice President Brent White from the University of Arizona and Vice President Wei Gehong from our university attended the ceremony. Heads of the Academic Affairs Office, the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, and the College of Resources and Environment, as well as nearly 87 freshmen majoring in Environmental Science, some teaching staff, class advisors for the freshmen, and parents of the freshmen who participated online, all joined the ceremony.

Vice President Wei Gehong Delivers a Speech

Vice President Wei Gehong, on behalf of the university, extended warm congratulations and a sincere welcome to the 87 new students of the Sino-foreign Cooperative Education Program and expressed his heartfelt thanks to the representatives from the University of Arizona who participated online from afar. He introduced the background and basic situation of the “4+0” cooperative education program between the two universities and put forward three expectations for the new students:

First, to have a great sentiment. As the backbone of national construction, young students should have a sense of patriotism, love agriculture, and interpret the school motto of “Integrity, Simplicity, Courage, and Perseverance” through their practical actions.

Second, to have a broad vision. Faced with the complex global situation, students should “base themselves in Northwest A&F University and face the future,” always be ready to step onto the center stage of the world and contribute to international development.

Third, to have great ideals. Students should establish noble and far-reaching ideals, be brave trend-setters of the times, and live up to their beautiful youth.

Vice President Brent White of the University of Arizona Delivers a Speech via Video

Professor Brent White delivered a speech via video, extending a warm welcome to the new students and giving a brief introduction to the University of Arizona. He wished the students success in their future studies and life.

Yan Dezhu, Secretary of the Party Committee of the College of Resources and Environment, Delivers a Thematic Speech

Yan Dezhu, the secretary of the Party committee of the College of Resources and Environment, delivered a thematic speech on the enrollment and teaching situation of the college in recent years, its achievements and contributions in relevant fields, and its development trend. He hoped that the students would make good use of the rich teaching resources from both China and abroad to plan well, build a knowledge structure with an international vision, and cultivate scientific research capabilities that integrate theory and practice. He encouraged the students to overcome difficulties, study hard, ride the waves, and forge ahead in their learning process.

Li Zhi and Huang Yimei, two teachers from the college, respectively introduced the Sino-foreign cooperative education program, the major, and the faculty. Tian Changhe presided over the ceremony, and Du Shengwen, representing the new students, expressed his gratitude to the college for giving them the opportunity to get close to international education. He assured that they would not disappoint the expectations of their parents and the school, and promised to strictly demand themselves in their future studies and life, strive to master scientific research methods, exercise their physical and mental abilities, cultivate noble personalities, and work tirelessly to seek knowledge and realize their self-worth.

The Sino-foreign cooperative undergraduate education program in Environmental Science between our university and the University of Arizona was approved in 2020. This program is the second international cooperative undergraduate education program of our university after the cooperation with Lincoln University in the United States by the College of Food Science and also the first approved cooperative program in Environmental Science in the country. The program is led and implemented by the College of Resources and Environment of our university. It was approved on March 3, 2020, with a total of 85 students recruited and four classes established. The teaching adopts a “4+0” joint training model, emphasizing the combination of Chinese and foreign education and using a variety of teaching methods. The program lasts for four years. Students complete the courses and credit requirements stipulated by both universities at Northwest A&F University. Those who meet the degree-granting conditions of both universities will be awarded bachelor's degrees from both universities.
